How teams work in topo making

Topo making is often a team effort, especially for large climbing areas. Teams let multiple climbers collaborate on the same topo, share maintainership and split income fairly.

What is a team?

A team in 27 Crags is a group of climbers who volunteer to maintain specific topos. Teams can be anything from one person working alone to a group of collaborators — a team of one is completely normal.

Why do you need a team?

You need a team to take maintainership of a crag and publish Premium topos. Once a crag is under a team's maintainership, only team members can add or edit content.

Other climbers can submit content suggestions to your Premium topos, which team members can accept or reject.

Admin vs regular members

Team members can be Admins or regular members. You need Admin status to:

  • Accept or reject new member requests

  • Change payment settings

  • View income information

Creating or joining a team

To join an existing team, request to join through the team's page — this gives you editing rights to their crags once accepted.

To create your own team, you can do so through the website or directly through the app when you start making a Premium topo.

⚠️ New teams are reviewed by 27 Crags before they're activated. This usually takes 3 business days. You can start creating the topo immediately, but you won’t have the full rights until your team is approved.

Taking maintainership of a crag

Once your team is active, there are two ways to claim maintainership of a crag:

From the app:

  • Go to the free topo you wish to take over

  • Scroll to the bottom

  • Click “Become the official author”

From the website (option 1)

  1. Go to the free topo you wish to take over

  2. Click Edit → Select Team

  3. Choose your team or create a new one

From your team page (option 2)

  1. Go to “crags” section

  2. Select "Add a crag"

Turning a free topo into a Premium topo

If you want to upgrade an existing free topo to Premium, first check who contributed to the free topo by viewing the Authors tab.

When creating your team you can invite those contributors to join — this ensures everyone who added content is part of the Premium team.

If you don’t add those people to the team, you might need to re-create the material (topo images and lines) they have earlier added.

Team income

All Admin members can view the team's monthly topo income in the team settings.

Income can be handled in two ways:

  • Shared between members based on contribution — split based on how much content each member has contributed. Your individual share appears in your personal profile settings.

  • Shared between members based on percentage — split based on percentages, which can be set in the payment settings.

  • Donated — you can donate the full income directly to a bolting or access fund of your choice.
