Do I own the content I add to 27 Crags?

Ownership depends on the type of content and when it was created.

Verified Topos

Verified Topo authors retain full ownership of their content. As the creator, you maintain permanent maintainership and the rights to your material. 27 Crags has a licence to display and use your content within the platform and for marketing purposes β€” for example, sharing photos from your topo on social media to promote your area.

Community Topos β€” content added before September 2025

Contributors who added content to Community Topos before September 2025 retain the rights to their work. This is why their permission is required if that content is used in a Verified Topo.

Community Topos β€” content added after September 2025

Content added to Community Topos after September 2025 is treated as an open community contribution. When publishing a Community Topo, authors are shown a clear notice explaining that their content becomes a community contribution β€” meaning others can use, edit, and build on it without needing permission.

Why does 27 Crags have rights to use and modify content?

You may notice that our terms and conditions state that 27 Crags has the right to use and modify material on the platform. This covers two things:

  1. Marketing β€” we may share photos and topo information to promote climbing areas on our social channels.

  2. Technical display β€” we need to modify images to work correctly across different screen sizes and formats in the app and website.
