27 Crags is now The Topo

Over the years we’ve been called 24 Craigs, 24/7 Grags, “Something Boulders”, Crack 24, and “What was the number again?” — among other things. It’s a hard name to remember, spell, and say out loud. But more than that, it stopped telling the right story a long time ago.
It started with 27 crags
When 27 Crags launched in 2008, the idea was simple: document the 27 best crags in the world. A curated list, nothing more. Then climbers started adding their own. And it didn’t stop. Climbers around the world kept adding what they knew, and it grew into something far beyond the original idea.
Today there are 5,000 Verified Topos in the system, created by local authors around the world. The number 27 stopped meaning anything a long time ago. But the name stuck.
So why now?
Honestly, we should have done it sooner. But a name change isn’t just a logo swap — it affects everything from app stores to search results to the muscle memory of 20 years of climbers typing “27 Crags” into Google. We wanted to get it right. The new name had to mean something to climbers.
A topo is the one thing every climber uses — the map that tells you where the routes are, how they go, what to expect. It’s the starting point of every climbing trip. It’s what this platform has always been, just without a name that said so.
What is The Topo?
Same platform. Same community. Same local knowledge built by climbers who actually know the rock. Your account, your ascents, your topos — nothing changes. The only difference is the name on the door. 50% of every subscription still goes back to the local authors who create the topos. That doesn’t change either — it’s the foundation the whole thing is built on.
What does the transition look like?
From 13 April we’ll be gradually updating our systems, app stores, and social media to reflect the new name. You might still see “27 Crags” in some places for a while — that’s normal, it takes time to update everything.
One last thing
27 Crags became what it is because climbers decided to share what they know. 5,000 Verified Topos built by people who just wanted to help others find the rock. You outgrew the name. It was time to catch up. Welcome to The Topo.
